WHEN PASSION TRANSCENDS BLOODLINE: CELEBRATING IWANIKE ELEJIGBAILEKE, THE YORUBA CULTURE AMBASSADOR
Morenike Princess Adedoyin a.k.a Iwanike Elejigbaileke has written her name into the history of the Masoyinbo programme by becoming the first contestant to win the grand prize of ₦1,000,000. But beyond the money and the achievement lies an even more remarkable story. Despite not being of Yoruba descent, Iwanike demonstrated an impressive depth of knowledge of the Yoruba language, culture, traditions and heritage, answering the Yoruba questions presented to her on the programme with remarkable confidence and accuracy. Identifying herself as Delta-Igbo, Iwanike was born and raised in Lagos and has nurtured a deep love for Yoruba culture from a very young age. Today, that passion has become more than an interest, it has become part of her profession and identity. She works as a Yoruba chanter, bead seller and presenter on a Yoruba-themed programme on Africa Magic, further demonstrating her dedication to preserving and promoting the richness of Yoruba heritage. At House of Orishas, we celebrate Iwanike not simply because she won ₦1 million, but because of what her achievement represents. She has shown that genuine appreciation for a culture can transcend ancestry and bloodline. More importantly, she has unintentionally held up a mirror to many Yoruba people who, despite being born into the culture, have paid little attention to learning, preserving and understanding their own heritage. Her achievement should therefore be more than a moment of celebration—it should be a wake-up call. If someone who did not grow up as Yoruba can develop such passion, knowledge and mastery of Yoruba culture, then there is no excuse for those born into the culture to remain disconnected from their own history, language, traditions and ancestral heritage. Iwanike Elejigbaileke has inspired us. She has reminded us that culture survives when people choose to learn it, practise it, teach it and proudly pass it on. From all of us at House of Orishas, we celebrate your excellence, your dedication and your remarkable representation of Yoruba culture. Congratulations, Iwanike Elejigbaileke. 🥂🏆 May your achievement inspire a new generation of Yoruba sons and daughters to rediscover, embrace and proudly carry their heritage forward. Àṣẹ!
